About Altrincham Municipal Golf Course
Golf has been played on this Stockport Road site since 1893, when Timperley Golf Club was founded. When the landowner died in 1934, the members were outbid for the course by Altrincham Urban Council, and it became a municipal course; Timperley's members moved on and eventually founded The Mere. The private Altrincham Golf Club was formed in 1935 to play the public course, which is run today by Trafford Council with Timperley Brook winding through it. It was the home course of Trinidad-born Roly West, a Cheshire county player whom both the course and Black British Golfers describe as the first Black golf professional in Britain. His son James West, a long-serving Cheshire county player, has worked at the course since 2007.
