About Cherokee Golf Course
Set in Frederick Law Olmsted's Cherokee Park (designed 1891), Cherokee is one of the oldest municipal golf courses in the United States and the oldest public course in Louisville, with golf dating to the mid-1890s. When golf was introduced in the park around 1900, the Olmsted firm urged the Board of Park Commissioners to reconsider, but the city proceeded. It remains a city-operated public facility, and in recent years its long-term future has been debated, including an Olmsted Parks Conservancy proposal to reimagine it as parkland.
