About Girvan

Girvan Golf Course, founded in 1902, is one of eight courses owned and run by South Ayrshire Council and the only golf in the town. James Braid shaped the layout, which has changed little since: the opening eight holes are pure links along the shore, and the remaining ten are parkland, crossed by the Water of Girvan. Edward Tull-Warnock, Britain's first registered Black dentist and brother of footballer Walter Tull, ran a dental surgery in Girvan from the 1920s until his death in 1950, and according to Black British Golfers he won club trophies at neighbouring Turnberry in 1928-30.
