About Karakung Golf Course

Karakung is the sister course to Philadelphia's municipal Olde Course at Cobbs Creek, in West Philadelphia. The Olde Course opened in 1916 and drew such crowds that Karakung was added in 1929, first as a nine-hole layout. Cobbs Creek was a national center of Black golf at a time when most courses barred Black players. Charlie Sifford and Howard Wheeler called it home, and it hosted United Golfers Association championships, including the 1947 Negro National Open. The site entered the African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 2016.
