Mt. Lebanon's nine-hole course began in July 1907, when about 30 men built putting greens on a 100-acre farm and formed the Castle Shannon Golf Club; local golf figure George A. Ormiston is credited with the layout. The club later reorganized and was a popular Pittsburgh-area nine through the 1920s-40s. The township bought it in 1947 and runs it as a municipal course. It marked its centennial in 2007 with a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation plaque.
