About Ormskirk Golf Club
Ormskirk Golf Club was formed in 1899 with nine holes laid out in Lathom Park, once part of a royal deer park whose turf had never been ploughed. Lord Lathom opened the course, and in 1903 a second nine was added to a design by Harold Hilton, the two-time Open champion (1892, 1897) and two-time Amateur champion. It remains an 18-hole heathland-parkland course of about 6,500 yards on Lancashire's golf coast. It is also where Jim Howard first carried a bag: while recovering from a knee injury as a boy in care, he caddied a few times for the superintendent of his children's home, an Ormskirk member. Howard went on to become the PGA's first Black member and spent 35 years as head professional at Pontypool.
