About Shady Rest Golf and Country Club

Shady Rest Golf and Country Club is a township-owned, nine-hole public course in Scotch Plains. The course dates to a Westfield golf club around the turn of the 20th century. In 1921 Black investors bought it and founded Shady Rest, one of the first Black-owned country clubs in the U.S. It was known as Scotch Hills Country Club from 1964, took back the Shady Rest name in 2021, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022.
