About Turnberry

Turnberry's original links was laid out in 1906 by Willie Fernie, the professional at Troon, on the South Ayrshire coast. It was requisitioned as an airfield in both World Wars, with holes flattened into concrete runways during the Second, and Mackenzie Ross rebuilt the Ailsa course, which reopened in 1951. The Open's first visit in 1977 produced the famous "Duel in the Sun" between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. According to Black British Golfers, Glasgow and Girvan dentist Edward Tull-Warnock, the son of a Barbadian father, was a Turnberry member who won the Weir Trophy in 1928 and the Nasmyth Cup from 1928 to 1930; his trophies are kept at the R&A World Golf Museum.
