About Avon Field

Avon Fields, in North Avondale on the Norwood line, is often called the oldest municipal course west of the Alleghenies. Built in 1914, it became a Cincinnati Recreation Commission property in 1928. City records of the original designer are lost (Donald Ross, William Langford and William Diddel have all been linked to it). The nines were swapped in the 1960s when the Norwood Lateral cut away some of the steepest hills, and the city later handed day-to-day operations to private managers (Kemper Sports, then Billy Casper Golf). Today it plays as a short, hilly par-66 18.
