Buffalo Dunes

Buffalo Dunes owes its existence to Garden City feedyard owner Earl Brookover, who donated the land to the city in 1974. Renowned course architect Frank Hummel designed the municipal layout, and construction began in 1976 across an arid, treeless stretch of sandy western Kansas soil. Hummel's original routing has long been praised for the way it links together natural green sites, generates genuine hole-to-hole variety, and leads golfers on an engaging exploration of the property, coaxing a memorable course from difficult ground. Decades on, Buffalo Dunes is still widely regarded as the finest public course in southwestern Kansas, a remarkable achievement for a municipal facility. Between 2021 and 2025 it underwent a patient, low-cost renovation led by architects Zach Varty and Todd Clark, who reworked roughly three holes each year to refresh Hummel's design.
