Camargo Club

The Camargo Club was formed in 1925 to give members of the land-locked Cincinnati Country Club a spacious new place to play. On the advice of Charles Blair Macdonald, the founders hired Seth Raynor to survey the site and plan the course. As was his habit, Raynor modeled the design on template holes Macdonald had identified as the game's finest, and Camargo's set of one-shotters, the Redan, Short, Biarritz, and Eden, is considered among his very best. Raynor died suddenly in early 1926, but the layout was completed and ready for play in 1927. Set across gently rolling hills cut by dramatic valleys and ravines, the course is celebrated for its bold bunkering and enormous, sharply contoured greens. Decades later, architect Tom Doak led a sensitive restoration, returning bunkers to Raynor's style and rebuilding the greens to their original proportions, reaffirming Camargo's standing as a template-design landmark.
