About Maplewood Golf Course

Maplewood opened on August 27, 1927 on dairyman Bill Orton's farm. Al Smith, a protege of architect Francis L. James, designed it, and Orton's house became the clubhouse. It closed within months and split into two courses, Cedar River and Maplegrove, which merged back into the Maplewood Golf Club in December 1932. A group led by Frank Aliment bought it in 1945 and sold it to the City of Renton in 1985 for $3.9 million.
