About Ottawa Park Golf Course
Ottawa Park opened in 1899 as a nine-hole public course, thanks to park commissioner Sylvanus P. Jermain, remembered as the father of public golf in Toledo. The city calls it the second-oldest public course in the U.S.; others call it the first municipal course west of New York City. It grew to 18 holes in 1920–21 and in 1922 hosted the first U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. A bronze statue of Jermain was dedicated beside the putting green in 1928. Toledo native Arthur Hills, who grew up near the park, renovated the course in 1977.
