About South Shore Golf Course
This nine-hole lakefront course is part of the South Shore Cultural Center, which began in 1905-1906 as the exclusive South Shore Country Club, a retreat for wealthy Chicagoans with a Mediterranean-style clubhouse by architects Marshall and Fox. The club barred Jewish and African American members and declined through the 1960s, holding its last event in 1974. The Chicago Park District acquired the property that year for more than $9 million, restoring the landmark clubhouse and keeping the golf course, beach and grounds open to the public in this historically Black South Side community.
