About Waveland Golf Course

Established in 1901, Waveland is reckoned to be the oldest municipal 18-hole golf course built west of the Mississippi River. Local amateur champion Warren Dickinson routed eighteen holes around city land known as Waveland Park, and the layout was soon expanded to twenty-seven holes. In the early 1930s the Des Moines Parks Department used New Deal and Public Works Administration funding to build a new clubhouse and engaged civil engineer Paul Coates to refurbish the course. It remains a municipal course owned by the City of Des Moines, set on wooded hillsides.
