Wild Horse Golf Club

Wild Horse grew out of a community effort in Gothenburg, Nebraska, where residents wanted a better course than the flood-prone layout they had. Locals funded the project by selling shares and platting home lots around the property, then hired Dave Axland and Dan Proctor of Bunker Hill Golf to design it. The pair had helped Coore & Crenshaw build the famed Sand Hills Golf Club not far to the northwest, and they brought the same minimalist, low-cost philosophy to Wild Horse, letting the natural sandy terrain dictate the routing. Since opening in 1999, the course has drawn national praise for delivering world-class links-style golf at an everyman price, regularly appearing on lists of the top public courses you can play. Firm fairways, wild native grasses, and clever green complexes reward creative shotmaking over raw power.
