Clifton Park opened in May 1916 on the former Clifton estate of merchant-philanthropist Johns Hopkins and is regarded as Maryland's oldest public golf course. It is a Baltimore municipal course, one of the city's "Classic Five" managed today by the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation. Under segregation it was restricted to white golfers; Black golfers were barred from Baltimore's better municipal courses until the 1940s desegregation fight led by the Monumental Golf Club, which culminated in full access in 1948.
