About Douglass Golf Course
Douglass Golf Course sits in Douglass Park, created in 1921 as Indianapolis's segregated park for Black residents. At a time when the city's four municipal courses turned Black golfers away, the Parks Board approved a six-hole course there in September 1926; early conditions were rough, with tin cans for cups. In 1927 a committee led by attorney Robert Lee Brokenburr won an expansion to nine holes, and the local Colored Golf Association held its first tournament there that year. Now run by Indy Parks, it is one of the oldest municipal courses in the U.S. where Black golfers were welcome, and it marked its centennial in 2026.
