EagleSticks opened in 1990 on rolling farmland just south of Zanesville, one of Dr. Michael Hurdzan's early solo public designs. The par-70 layout stretches only about 6,500 yards from the tips, a deliberate choice by Hurdzan, who prized shot placement and angles over raw length. Roughly 90 bunkers and undulating bentgrass greens reward players who attack from the correct side of the fairway, while more than 100 feet of elevation change ripples across the property. Five bridges built from salvaged corn-crib and barn timbers nod to the land's agricultural past. The course drew national attention almost immediately, earning runner-up honors for Golf Digest's Best New Public Course in 1991, and it later reached the magazine's Top 100 Public list, cementing a reputation as one of Ohio's best affordable rounds.
