Elbel Golf Course sits on about 300 acres of South Bend park land on the city's north side. City records say it opened in the mid-1960s and is named for a longtime member of South Bend's Board of Park Commissioners, who served from the 1910s until the late 1930s. In 2015 the Park Board voted to sell the course after years of operating losses. Blackthorn Golf Club's management group was the main bidder and pledged to keep it a public golf course.
