Hawktree Golf Club

Hawktree Golf Club opened in 1999 on the rolling prairie north of Bismarck, North Dakota, and quickly established itself as one of the Upper Midwest's most distinctive courses. It was an early solo effort by architect Jim Engh, who blended a Scottish-links character with bold, modern shaping across the natural coulees and grasslands of the site. Hawktree's most famous signature is its bunkers: rather than sand, they are filled with black slag, a burned-coal byproduct that gives the hazards a striking dark appearance and, practically, resists blowing away in North Dakota's persistent wind. Native grasses, dramatic contours, and wide prairie views give the course a rugged, natural feel, and its early acclaim helped launch the state's reputation for surprising, high-quality golf. It remains a headline stop on North Dakota's golf trail.
