About Jefferson Park Golf Course
Opened in May 1915 as Seattle's first municipally owned golf course, Jefferson Park was designed by Scottish-born architect Thomas Bendelow on Beacon Hill. It became a cradle of Black golf history: Bill Wright learned the game there as a junior member of the affiliated Fir State Golf Club and in 1959 won the U.S. Amateur Public Links, becoming the first Black golfer to win a USGA national championship. Future Masters champion Fred Couples also grew up on the course. On October 19, 2024, the City of Seattle renamed it the Bill Wright Golf Complex; it remains municipally owned and is operated by Premier Golf.
