The Barrington course was first known as Hillcrest Acres and was renamed Thunderbird after the Makray family bought it in 1962. The family closed it in 2002 for a complete rebuild of every fairway, tee and green, and it reopened in 2004 as Makray Memorial. It has hosted the Illinois State Junior since 2007 and first hosted the Illinois PGA Championship in 2022.
