About Mayfair Country Club
Sanford bought 152 acres in 1922 and opened the first holes of its municipal golf course that October as Sanford Golf Club (later Sanford Country Club); the full 18 opened in September 1924. A 1998 historical marker credits Donald Ross, but historian Ron Whitten attributes the design to Cuthbert Butchart, and no plans confirm either. The New York Giants, who trained in Sanford, leased it in 1953 and renamed it Mayfair; it hosted pro tour events from 1958 to 1961. It is city-owned, semi-private and open to the public.
