Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth opened in 1923 as a three-hole course laid out on the old Chase family peach orchard. It grew to 18 holes, was cut back to nine shortly before World War II, and later had its back nine brought back largely by members who held rock-picking parties and mowed greens themselves. With no formal architect, the layout has evolved over the years; it is a semi-private club where water comes into play on several holes.
