Purgatory Golf Club opened in 2000 on former wetlands and prairie north of Indianapolis, in Noblesville, and was designed by architect Ron Kern. Kern drew on the strategic philosophy of Alister MacKenzie, giving the course flashed, knob-edged bunkering, high fescue rough and firm, links-like ground. It is best known for two things: length and sand. From the back tees the par-72 layout stretches to roughly 7,750 yards, making it one of the longest courses of its kind, anchored by a par 5 that plays well over 700 yards. More than 130 bunkers come into play across the property. Yet Kern built the course to be enjoyed by everyone, offering six sets of tees ranging from over 7,700 yards down to under 4,600, so shorter hitters can find a fair and generous test.
