About Rogers Park Golf Club

A City of Tampa municipal course, Rogers Park opened as a nine-hole layout around 1952, built by Willie Black and a crew of Black caddies from Palma Ceia Country Club after Mayor Curtis Hixon granted them permission to use part of the park. Named for Black entrepreneur and philanthropist Garfield Devoe Rogers Sr., it was Tampa's first golf course open to Black residents during segregation. It soon expanded to 18 holes and became a nationally known stop on the Black golf circuit.
