The Timbers was planned in 1994 as an 18-hole public course with villa housing on a wooded, 270-acre site in Tuscola Township, designed by Lorrie Viola. Golf Course News reported that Viola was the first woman to design an 18-hole golf course in Michigan. The front nine opened in June 1996 and the back nine that August.
