About Whisper Rock Golf Club
Whisper Rock Golf Club, in the high Sonoran Desert north of Scottsdale, was founded by developer Gregg Tryhus as a golf-first retreat where membership follows invitation rather than real estate. Its Lower Course opened in 2001 and marked Phil Mickelson's first venture into course design, a collaboration with architect Gary Stephenson across boulder-strewn desert terrain. Tom Fazio added the Upper Course in 2005, offering wider fairways and larger greens as a contrast to the Lower's tighter demands. Whisper Rock is best known for its extraordinary membership: a small roster that famously includes a cluster of touring professionals, giving its practice range a near-mythic reputation among tour players. With memberships capped per course, the club prizes access, privacy and pure competition over amenities.
