Brunswick Golf Club

Est. 1898 · Charles L. Bowker (original course with George Skofield and George L. Thompson, 1898); Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek (1921 redesign); Geoffrey Cornish (new nine, 1969)
Why we love this place

We love Brunswick for its deep roots and classic feel. Founded by Bowdoin students in 1898, polished by Wayne Stiles and expanded by Geoffrey Cornish, it is a true Maine original. A walkable, welcoming eighteen where state championships and Saturday games feel equally at home.

About Brunswick Golf Club

Brunswick Golf Club began in the summer of 1898, when Bowdoin College students and a professor played the first golf on ground that is now the back nine. That September the club was founded as the Bowdoin Golf Club with twenty members, and founders Charles L. Bowker, Captain George Skofield, and Colonel George L. Thompson laid out the original course. Renamed the Brunswick Golf Club in 1901, it built its first clubhouse in 1903 on the hill behind today's seventeenth green. Member Charles S. Erswell formed a golf group that grew into the Maine State Golf Association, and Brunswick was among the association's founding clubs in 1917. In 1921 Wayne Stiles and his partner John Van Kleek redesigned the original nine, and beginning in 1959 club professional Mal Strange worked with architect Geoffrey Cornish on a new nine, completed in 1969, that became today's front nine. The club has hosted the Maine Amateur in 1997 and 2017 and the Maine Women's Amateur several times.
