Val Halla Golf and Recreation Center

Est. 1964 · Philip A. Wogan
Why we love this place

We love Val Halla because it is golf built by neighbors for neighbors. Six locals wanted a good course close to home, and sixty years later the town still runs it. Tree-lined, traditional and welcoming, it is the classic community eighteen every town wishes it had.

About Val Halla Golf and Recreation Center

Val Halla Golf and Recreation Center began with six Cumberland residents who decided they did not want to drive all the way to Portland for a decent round of golf. Their idea became an eighteen-hole, par-72 course in Cumberland Center, which opened for play in 1964 to a design by architect Philip Wogan, who is credited with some thirty courses. The founders borrowed the name from Valhalla, the great hall of Odin in Norse mythology. Today the course is owned and operated by the Town of Cumberland, with memberships for residents and returning members alongside daily public play. The wooded, traditional layout is heavily lined with trees and set within a residential neighborhood, and the facility also includes a driving range and practice green, a junior golf program, and active men's and ladies' leagues, making it a genuine community hub for the town more than six decades after those first neighbors set out to build it.
