About Hiawatha Golf Club

This Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board municipal course opened its first nine holes on July 30, 1934, built on land dredged from Lake Hiawatha and designed by William D. Clark. Adjacent to the historically Black Bronzeville neighborhood, Hiawatha welcomed African American golfers barred elsewhere and became a hub for the Twin City Golf Club; the Bronze amateur tournament traces here to 1939. Its clubhouse stayed segregated until golfer Solomon Hughes Sr. led a campaign that pushed the Park Board to desegregate all Minneapolis courses in 1952. In 2021 the Park Board renamed the building the Solomon Hughes Sr. Clubhouse.
