The Meadows opened in 1994 on Grand Valley State University's Allendale campus. An advisory committee led by then-president Arend D. Lubbers, including biology and geology faculty, chose architect Michael Hurdzan partly to enhance the campus wetlands. The university-owned course had hosted nine NCAA national championships as of 2019 and has hosted MHSAA state finals since 2003.
