About Sombrero Country Club

Industrialist Stanley Switlik bought the Marathon land in 1952. The Mark Mahannah-designed course opened January 16, 1960 as the Sombrero Yacht and Golf Club, an 18-hole layout built on marl and coral fill with 12 water hazards. In 1966 Switlik sold it to members and local residents, and it became the non-profit Sombrero Country Club, now called the Florida Keys Country Club. Hurricane Irma closed it in 2017, and nine holes reopened to the public in January 2019.
