The Links of North Dakota opened in 1995 on a windswept, treeless 250-acre site above Lake Sakakawea, the vast reservoir formed when the Missouri River was dammed. Designed by architect Stephen Kay, the course was conceived as a genuine links-style layout, using the rumpled natural terrain, firm turf, and constant prairie wind to recreate the ground-game golf of the British Isles far from any ocean. Set near Williston and Ray in the state's northwest, it plays across open, rolling land with long views over the water and few artificial features to break the horizon. The design drew national praise almost immediately, being named among the best new courses in America and the best new affordable course in the country at its debut.
