Birdsfoot Golf Club was built on family farmland on Furnace Run Road near Freeport in Armstrong County. The plan to turn the sloping farm into a golf course began in 1998, and a loan from The Progress Fund, a community lender, seeded the project before government agencies and conventional lenders followed. The par-72 course, designed by James Cervone, opened in 2002.
