The course at what is now Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware opened in 1911 with the inn, built by C.C. Worthington. It was the first course designed by A.W. Tillinghast. Worthington's call to professionals at an early Shawnee Open helped lead to the founding of the PGA of America. Shawnee hosted the 1919 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1938 PGA Championship. Fred Waring bought the resort in 1943, and Bill Diddle later added a third nine.
