Chena Bend Golf Course

Chena Bend is the golf course at Fort Wainwright, the Army post just east of Fairbanks, and it wears the title of the farthest-north military golf course in the United States. Records trace play on the site back to 1942, the World War II years when the installation was still known as Ladd Field. The current 18-hole, par-72 layout was redesigned by Michigan architect Jerry Matthews, a former president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The course threads between the airfield and the Chena River, with several holes running right along the fast-moving water. Operated by the Army's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation program and open to the public, Chena Bend has repeatedly been ranked among Golf Digest's top courses in Alaska.
