About Forty Niner Golf and Country Club

Forty Niner opened in 1961 in the Tanque Verde area of east Tucson, a William F. Bell design developed by former Major League outfielder Hank Leiber, who had come to Tucson to play baseball at the University of Arizona. Its tree-lined fairways follow a wooded riverbed. The club hosted the PGA Tour's Tucson Open in the early 1960s, with Don January winning in 1963 and Jack Cupit in 1964. It operates today as a semi-private club open to outside play.
