The Highlands opened as The Briar Patch, one of the earliest collaborations between Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, with Nicklaus serving as a consultant during his playing career. The course was part of the resort during the Playboy Club era, which ended in 1981. In the 1990s Bob Cupp redesigned the whole course, adding fescue areas, and it was renamed The Highlands.
