About Gus Wortham Park Golf Course

Gus Wortham Park Golf Course occupies the site of the original Houston Country Club, laid out in 1908 along Brays Bayou, making it the oldest golf course in Houston. When the club relocated in 1957, insurance magnate Gus Wortham bought the course; he sold it to the City of Houston in 1973, which renamed the municipal course in his honor. After preservationists (Friends of Gus Wortham, formed 2007) fended off proposals to convert the land into a soccer stadium and botanic garden, the Houston Golf Association raised millions and architect Baxter Spann restored the course, reopening it in 2017.
