About Hancock Golf Course
Hancock Golf Course dates to 1899, when former Austin mayor Lewis Hancock and others founded the Austin Golf Club; it became the original Austin Country Club and is described as the oldest continuously operated golf course west of the Mississippi River. The City of Austin acquired the property in 1946 when the country club relocated, and it now operates as a 9-hole municipal course. Harvey Penick began his career here as a caddie, and the course was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
