Hermann Park Golf Course

Hermann Park Golf Course, a City of Houston municipal course, opened in July 1923 and became a landmark in golf desegregation. In 1948 Black golfers including Dr. Anthony Beal, Dr. Walter Minor, Dr. Hughes J. Lyman, and businessmen J.H. Jamison and Milton Pruitt were refused play; in 1950 they sued Mayor Oscar Holcombe and the city in Beal v. Holcombe. The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled for the plaintiffs in 1952, and in June 1954 Hermann Park became one of the first fully desegregated public golf courses in the South.
