Kebo Valley Golf Club

Est. 1888 · Herbert C. Leeds (with Waldron Bates and Shirley Liscomb); Donald Ross (1926, rebuilt 3rd hole)
Why we love this place

We love Kebo Valley because it is living golf history at the doorstep of Acadia. A Leeds routing, a hole named for a president's 27, and a Hagen record that stood fifty years. Mountains frame the fairways, and every round feels like a walk through the game's American beginnings.

About Kebo Valley Golf Club

Kebo Valley Golf Club was incorporated on April 27, 1888, making it the oldest golf club in Maine and, by the club's own count, the eighth oldest in the country. Its first clubhouse opened in 1889 as part of a Bar Harbor summer amusement grounds that also held a theater, a racetrack, and tennis and croquet courts. Herbert C. Leeds laid out the first six holes in 1891, and the course reached nine holes in 1896. After a 1906 reconstruction, the club acquired forty acres east of Harden Farm Road and opened its outer nine in 1920, completing eighteen holes shaped by Leeds, Waldron Bates, and professional Shirley Liscomb. Donald Ross recommended rebuilding the third hole in 1926. Harry Vardon played an exhibition here in 1900, President William Howard Taft famously took 27 strokes on today's 17th in 1911, and Walter Hagen set a course record of 67 in 1922 that stood for half a century. Kebo first hosted the Maine Amateur in 1960 and has welcomed it many times since.
