Maxwell Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole City of Abilene municipal course. It was named by the City Council for Will Ownby "Pops" Maxwell, who helped clear the land for Abilene's first golf course in 1921 and served as club manager and groundskeeper. (Despite the name it is NOT a Perry Maxwell design.) Sources disagree on both the opening year (1934 vs 1979) and the designer, with a later redesign attributed to Garrett Gill and George Williams, so year and designer are left unconfirmed.
