Metedeconk National Golf Club

Metedeconk National was the vision of father-and-son developers Richard and Herb Sambol, who owned a large tract in Jackson and, encouraged by Pine Valley chairman Ernie Ransome, chose championship golf over a housing plan. They hired Robert Trent Jones Sr., working alongside his longtime associate Roger Rulewich, and the first eighteen holes opened in 1987. A third nine was added in 1998, giving the club 27 holes. Jones reportedly counted the par-four seventh among his favorites, and the layout is known for its lacy, jagged-edged bunkering, generous elevation changes and water in play at the closing holes. Set within an hour of both New York and Philadelphia, the private club was conceived as a secluded golfing oasis and remains one of New Jersey's most admired modern designs.
