About Norman K. Probstein Golf Course
Forest Park's municipal golf course opened in 1912 as a nine-hole layout by Scottish-born Robert Foulis, growing to 27 holes by 1915; the City of St. Louis owns it. After a 2001-2004 rebuild funded largely by developer Norman K. Probstein, it was renamed the Norman K. Probstein Community Golf Course. It carries important Black-golf history: in 1922 four African American golfers won access after applying for permits, but Circuit Judge Moses Hartmann limited them to Monday mornings under "separate but equal." In 1931 the Paramount Golf Club formed here under Dr. Samuel Shepard Jr., with James Siler dubbed the "Father of Negro Golf" in St. Louis.
