Pelham Bay opened in 1901 as one of the nation's earliest municipal golf courses, six years after Van Cortlandt made the Bronx home to America's first public course. Civil engineer Lawrence Van Etten laid out the original; in the mid-1930s Robert Moses's Parks Department used New Deal relief money to rework it under architect John Van Kleek, and it became half of New York City's only 36-hole facility alongside Split Rock. A $10.8 million renovation in 2009 restored the Art Deco clubhouse murals. It remains city-owned and open to the public.
