Pine Lakes Country Club, nicknamed "The Granddaddy," opened in 1927 as the first golf course in Myrtle Beach and on the Grand Strand. It was designed by Robert White, a Scotsman from St. Andrews who was the founding president of the PGA of America and a co-founder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. The course originally opened as Ocean Forest Country Club, and in 1954 the concept for Sports Illustrated magazine was reportedly born during a Time-Life executive retreat held there. An extensive renovation was completed in 2021.
