River Oaks Golf Plantation opened in 1988 with 18 holes (the Fox and Otter nines) designed by Gene Hamm on 800 acres of former nature preserve along the Intracoastal Waterway. Tom Jackson added the Bear nine in 1991, making it a 27-hole facility whose nines are named for the animals that once inhabited the land.
